Growing up in rural Nebraska, there were zero people of color or openly gay people for miles. In fact, my community was so homogenous that the only difference in any of us was the haves and have-nots. The same churches and belief systems, same clothes, same food choices, same schools, even the same football team. You either had money or you didn’t. That was the only difference. Growing up in the eighties, even television didn’t offer any insight into other races and cultures. Our news anchors were white and relatable, and the TV shows and movies generally portrayed negative stereotypes. I was oblivious to it all. Uneducated.
